car engines work on a simple basis of suck, squeeze bang, blow. this means that in the first stroke of a piston the air fuel mixture is sucked into the cylinder, the valves then close. when the piston travels back up the cylinder it compresses the air fuel mix and then the spark plug ignites this making the explosion and forcing the piston back down the cylinder, this is the bang stage. then finally the piston travels back up the cylinder and blows out all the exhaust gases. this completes the four stroke cycle for the engine.
