Essentially there is an internal combustion engine or electric motor or both which produced rotational motion. The vehicles transmission takes the engine's or motor's rotation and regulates it to the appropriate speed for the main axle. The axles transfer this rotation to the wheels and the wheels take them onto the road and the friction between the road and the wheels, as between your shoes and the floor you walk on, allow the car to push itself forward.
