I would NOT DRIVE THE CAR. You can start it then change the oil immediatly. Transmisson oil is a great cleaner but not a very good lubricant for an engine.

What would cause a Nissan Altima transmission to hesitate when putting it into drive or reverse?

I was told by my mechanic that the transmission hesitating after putting it in drive after reversing is a sign of the transmisison dying. ---------- Check transmission fluid. When the fluid is low there is not enough in the torque converter, so when you go to reverse or drive you have to rev the engine before it moves to compensate for less fluid in the torque converter.

What if you accidentally pour a quart of oil into the automatic transmission fluid?

Don't drive it, but have it towed to a reputable garage that can flush the transmission. Driving it with the oil may cause serious damage to the transmission.

You accidentally put one quart of fluid in the transmission will it ruin your transmission right away?

You failed to mention what fluid you accidentally put in. In any case, have the transmission fluid flushed out and replaced with the proper ATF right away.

What happens if you accidentally pour power steering fluid into your transmission?

I am not a mechanic, but I know you have a problem. I would suggest draining the transmission and replacing it with the proper fluid. I wouldn't drive it because I think that might worsen the problem.

Does a manual transmission on a Saturn sl1 have to have fluid in it to engage starter?

Your manual transmission does not have to have fluid in it in order to start the engine. Theoretically you can start the engine with the transmission out of the vehicle totally. That being said.... Its not a good idea to start the engine if there is no fluid in the transmission just in case someone tries to move the vehicle by putting it in gear. You do not want to drive the vehicle with no fluid in the trans.
