A real man, who gave birth to well, a popular cartoon character, and later a money-maker for the Knickerbocker Toy company- Raggedy Anne. Mr. Gruelle was a cartoonist for a newspaper, mainly the one-shot political types ( before the crisis event he did not draw any series characters) then, as I recall reading, all in a day"s work, or coming home from same, Mr. Gruelle witnessed an extremely violent crime- either a suicide or a bank robbery. maybe both, when the robbers saw the cops coming one of them shot himself in the head, a horrible death witnessed by everybody in the bank, and neighoring area. This shook up Gruelle so much he retreated into fantasy Cartoons- creating Raggedy Anne in the process. there is little or no measurable violence in the series books, by the way, here a reality violence caused a man to retreat into fantasy light stuff!
