It means that your transmission has been hot and the fluid has overheated. If the transmission is still functioning properly then have the fluid and filter changed ASAP.
without a detailed question, i can only assume that the transmission has went out, either that, or the transmission fluid level is low.
If it is automatic you have problems. If it is standard you still have problems. Put some transmission fluid in it then if it still "slams" you need a new transmission. ---------- The transmission is not slamming itself yet you are experiencing the gear drop in rather hard inside the casing. Check your transmission fluid level and make sure its full. Also check the consistency and color of the fluid to see if it needs to be changed (filter also will need to changed). I had an old Pontiac do this very thing and it was because it was extremely low on trans fluid. - jedgell233
The better question is what is leaking transmission fluid?
I am having the same problem with my transmission. What holes are you talking about and where are they located? Mine leaks all the time, I have tried new gaskets and sealants but it still leaks. It runs great, but I have to keep the oil topped off every couple of weeks. I think it is a A727 tranny. Very tough.
The first thing to check is transmission fluid level. Start the car and let it warm up to normal running temperature. With the engine still running, pull the dipstick for the transmission fluid and verify that it's in the "hot" range. If you are low on fluid, look for any transmission fluid leaks. Look primarily around the oil seals where the axel enters the transmission, and inspect the gasket for the transmission pan.
because the transmission didn't have IT'S fluid chanded every 25,000 miles.Answerthe automatic transmission fluid was changed and the solenoids, but it still will not change gears until the car is warm. AnswerProbably a tired/worn front pump.
Transmission fluid needs to be changed every 39k miles on your car. dont worry if you have not changed the fluid yet and you have 60k + on it, you can still do it and be ok. if your car has over 110k miles and have never had the fluid changed I would recommend NOT changing it. Because by then all the silver/metal is holding stuff together, and if you change that out, you could cause more problems.....I have seen it happen. but yeah every 39k miles is good.
what is the problem when the car will not go in drive or reverse? and the transmission fluid is still full
If the pan gasket and filter have been recently changed and the transmission fluid is still leaking, it could be coming from the transmission cooler lines, front or rear transmission seals, or a crack in the transmission casing. It's recommended to have a professional mechanic inspect the transmission system to pinpoint the exact source of the leak.
There are many oil seals in that vehicle, need to know which ones you changed.
If it is a rear-wheel-drive vehicle you should see a transmission dipstick near the back of the engine. Transmissions are often checked with the engine running and in neutral but some vehicle manufacturers requre that their transmissions be checked with the engine off. Always have the vehicle parked on a level surface to check the transmission fluid. Transmission fluid should be bright red. If it has turned dark and smells burnt you might be having transmission problems. When automatic transmission clutches slip they produce heat that burns the fluid. You should never have a burnt smell to the transmission fluid. If the transmission still shifts ok you should have the fluid changed every 60,000 miles at least. Some manufacturers suggest more often. If all else fails, go to a full service gas station and ask them to check the transmission fluid and watch while they do it.
