Switch, circuit, shift motor
A loose belt on the motor.
Your truck may smell like a number of things when you accelerate if you have a leak in the ventilation system. It is possible to smell burning motor oil, gas, windshield washer fluid and other things.
I would run a jumper wire direct to the wiper motor to see if it powers up. If no power, motor is shot.
it depends on exactly what went wrong but probaly a high pitched whine and it would smell bad at first
I have a 2002 Chevy Impala and I had the same question. Mine is under the passenger side glove box in back of the blower motor up against the firewall. Mine is very hard to get at, I am thinking of taking the blower motor off so I can get at it better. Anyway, I would guess it would be right by the blower motor...:)
I'm not a mechanic / technician but from what I have read there are ( 3 ) different engine blocks for the Ford 4.0 liter Over Head Valve , V6 engine ( 1991 to 1994 Ford Explorer ) ( 1995 and 1996 Ford Explorer ) ( 1997 to 2000 Ford Explorer ) * so I would say the answer is ( no )
No. The lava there would be very viscous.

Defrost uses the a/c, if it doesn't smell the same with a/c only on. The smell is coming from the blower motor. Bmw's for example have a problem where the blower blade contacts the plastic housing and causes it to rub/melt.
The impeller is either clogged with something, your filter is clogged or your pump motor has a defect. The pump is working very hard so it heats up. You said you vacuumed? My bet is on the clogged filter! Well, the filter, the large tank, would never have aburnt smell. Ya gotta be talkin' about the pump motor. Turn off the motor, get down and sniff towards the back side of the motor being careful not to put your hand on the motor as it may be hot to the touch. If the motor smells like burning wires then the motor may be getting ready to crash. How old is the motor? Did you empty the pump basket after vacuuming? A dirty filter usually will not cause the motor to burn.
Bad diet.
