It depends on the make and model. Some have a toe shifter like a motorcycle that is operated with the left foot. Other models have buttons on the handle bar that shifts gears electrically. Still other, newer ones are shiftless. You put it in high, low or reverse, and no shifting is required.
My guess would be you shift shaft teeth are worn or your clutch is going out. Also check and see if the shifter is rubbing and catching on anything.
okay this depends on what type of machine your polaris is. if its an ATV, there will be a big shift knob on the left side of the gas tank, and that should be pretty easy to figure out how to use. this is true for every polaris ATV except in the case of the 2000 polaris expedition 425, in wich it was a manual transmission, and you had to manually shift using your feet. in the case of snowmobiles, you do not have to shift them. they use a belt drive system that does everything for you
the ATV should be in neutral to start the ATV. do not press the gas and lift the shifter up to put it in gear and push the throttle and you will be on your way. (some auto clutch ATV's gears are all down instead of up.)
semi-auto you have to shift. full auto just give it gas and go.
you'd have to get into the transmission to change a shift fork
bearings or diff. gears worn out.
just rev it up real high in first till you think its good then shift real fast to 3rd and there you go. Whoever first worte this answer to your question is a real idiot and aparently doesnt know anything about an ATV or probably cars either! You will have to get the gears replaced,it would be best to look into some gears that are made by a company called ukon. They make a complete kit to replace all your troublsome gears. Its a some what expensive process but, well worth not having to deal with this problem ever again.
Sounds like clutch may need adjusted. Or maybe replaced.
ATV tires are often sold at the ATV stores. They will help give you the best advice for your specific ATV. Try looking on classified advertisements if you want the cheapest deal available.
