Rudolf Diesel was a German engineer and the inventor of the diesel engine, the first of which ran on a powder made of finely ground coal dust.

He was trying to find a way to improve the internal combustion engine and, in 1892, he invented the first compression ignition engine.

It was new technology - mainly because it did not require a spark ignition coil nor any spark plugs - and he got a patent for it.

From that time onwards it became known as the "Diesel Engine".
