Most aircraft have their largest capacity stored inside their wings. Tanks normally span from the wingtip in towards the engine drybay. The drybay, immediately above the wing mounted engine, contains valves which open/close to direct the fuel to the engine(s) as needed. Continuing inward, a new tank will start. This continues under the passenger compartment (referred to as the "center wing tank") and onward to the opposite wing tank. On some aircraft, the belly of the airframe will also contain fuel tanks, (in addition to the baggage/cargo compartment. Fuel is prevented from leaking from the structure by two popular methods. Either a "buna N rubber or viathane bladder cell" lining, or the more popular "integral" tank where the skin of the airframe forms the boundaries. Every mating surface and it's hardware is sealed with a polysulfide or similar epoxy sealant.
