Inside the alternator. On my 85 it's the silver box on the passenger side fender.

im scanning the web for the same answer i have an 85 so far the answer is pull the motor out
The starter on a 85 Cutlass is replaced by disconnecting the battery, unbolting the starter, disconnecting the wires at the starter, and removing it from the vehicle. The new starter is then wired up and bolted to the engine block.

Its a simiconductor device inside of the alternator.
Starter solenoid? Battery + cable to large lug Starter cable to the other large lug Trigger wire to small lug (if 2 disregard 1)
follow the positive battery cable to the starter solenoid. there's three wires and two 8mm bolts. disconnect the negative battery cable then replace the solenoid by transferring the wires from the old to the new
The torque strut mount must come out along with the mount to remove the alternator
u need to take the whole dash out from the drivers side to the passengers side . basically the book will tell you how to do it and its not really that hard or wasnt on my 89 are you near charlotte ?
Two bolts hold the starter to the block. There may also be a brace on the other end of the starter.
