It sandwiches the clutch friction plate to the flywheel. The flywheel is connected to the engine, the friction plate is connected to the gearbox. Strong springs inside the cover plate hold the friction plate firmly to the flywheel. When the clutch lever is operated, springs in the cover plate are compressed, thus releasing the pressure on the friction plate, disengaging the gearbox from the engine.
To remove the flywheel on a 1998 Fat Boy Harley, you will need a flywheel puller and some basic tools. Here's what to do: Make sure the bike is in Neutral. Disconnect the wires from the primary cover. Remove the primary cover. Remove the bolts holding the flywheel down. Use the flywheel puller to remove the flywheel from the crankshaft.Once the flywheel has been removed, you can now replace it with a new one. Make sure to use the same bolts to secure the flywheel to the crankshaft, and reconnect the wires to the primary cover.
A cats paw will fit nicely into the grove just in front of the flywheel (engine side) The curve on the long pry side is just enough to slip into the oval hole in the fly wheel while coming straight out and you can rest it on the frame of the vehicle. All this takes place where the starter mounts to the flywheel. You must have removed the starter and the starter dust cover. Use a 15mm wrench to turn the fly wheel with one of the three flywheel to torque converter bolts toward the starter hole then the above can be done to lock the flywheel into place.
Flywheel
With a rat hole cover that is properly vented.
It is always a good idea to take pictures of each removal step to make reassembly easier. Remove cover on the pull rope housing. Locate the flywheel which the pull cord wraps around. Remove screws or bolts that attach flywheel on the housing unit. Caution, be careful on recoil spring position. Locate hole on flywheel (side view) in which the original cord was feed through. Feed replacement into hole and tie a single knot. Reattach assembly.
Snaps in a drain hole to cover up the drain.
The flywheel is mounted on the driveshaft. There is a slot in the side of the driveshaft that lines up with a slot on the inside of the flywheel's center hole - into the large slot created by lining up the two slots is where the flywheel key goes.
It's not connected to the cover. The pressure plate is bolted to the flywheel with the clutch disc sandwiched in between.
Remove Rocker Cover, Remove small plate on the engines transfer case and insert tool to wind over the flywheel until the motor is at no1 Top Center on the Compression Stroke. a bolt will be able to be inserted into a hole in the flywheel at the cover removed earlier. If you go past TC, the flywheel needs to be rotated backwards 60 degrees and then forward again to Top Center. Note: The Rocker Arms on each adjustment should have a small amount of movement in them. ie. clearance. Adjust Intake: 1 , 3, 5 Adjust Exhaust 1, 2, 4 Remove bolt out of flywheel and turn the flywheel 360 degrees. Insert Bolt in same hole again. Adjust Intake: 2, 4, 6 Adjust Exhaust: 3, 5, 6 Refer to the Vehicle's Service Manual for Valve Clearances, however they should be Intake: 0.015" and Exhaust: 0.025"
on the bottom of the at the front of the trans. there is a cover which is (commonly) called a dust cover (not trying to sound like a smart ass) remove the dust cover on the bottom to acess the converter bolts. you need to rent or buy a tool that wil help you turn the flywheel. If it is a diesel, there is a small round access hole on the passenger side of the engine. Just above the access for the turning tool. The turning tool hole has a plastic plug in it, the t-conv hole is covered by a plate with two bolts.
