I have a 1999 Ford escort zx2 with manual tran's. it has a rough idle but when you disconnect the cam sensor it runs fine. what is the cause?

Sounds like the sensor is bad. The sensor may be sending bad data to the computer. The computer assumes that the information is correct. The computer then uses this bad information to calculate fuel delivery, etc., therefore causing poor performance. By unplugging the sensor, computer receives no data, the computer relies on data from other inputs/stored data to calculate proper output values. Try replacing the sensor. Hope this helps. Where does the coolant temp sensor wire come from in a 1996 ford ranger 4.0 l engine?

The coolant temp sensor wire comes from the firewall area. An easy way to make the temp sensor work if you can not find it is to connect the sensor directly to the battery. The sensor uses wireless technology to send its data. It might take an hour or more of driving for the sensor to reset before it starts sending data to the computer. .
