My Proton had a rubber insert in the head gasket which leaked. Oil ran out between head and cylinder. Occured at 45k miles. Solution was a new gasket. A local motor parts shop supplied an oil additive to prevent a reoccurance.

Replacing the water pump on a 1993 Ford Explorer is a bit of a project, but don't worry, you can do it! First, make sure to drain the coolant from the radiator. Then, remove the belt that drives the water pump, unbolt the old pump, clean the area, and install the new pump. Finally, refill the coolant, start the engine, and check for any leaks. Just take it one step at a time, and remember, there are happy little accidents along the way that make the journey all the more interesting.
The manifold gasket is the same as the plenum gasket. The manifold gasket is a barrier between the manifold and the engine block.

Seperate the manifold from the engine and scrape off the old gasket, sand it down with emery cloth, Make sure to keep debris from going inside the chamber. Insert the new gasket and get the manifold close then wiggle it around till you can get a few bolts in then thread the rest in. torque them down to spec and your done.
no gasket sealant needed. Just original gasket is fine.
