If you mistakenly fill up the tank of a non-diesel car with diesel fuel, you have to drain the tank. DO NOT START THE CAR, NOT EVEN FOR A FEW SECONDS. If you can drain the tank without ever starting the engine, there shouldn't be too much damage to the engine, if any at all. But if you start the car, and diesel fuel is fed into the engine.....well, you'll be either shopping for a new engine, or paying your mechanic a small fortune to rebuild it.
