many people will tell you many diffrent causes.
such as a blown head gasket,bad thermostat,and bad water pump.
but i will say its a trapped air bubble.
if for any reason your radiator or resivoir has went down air got into your system.
take cap off resv. start car and turn heat on..let it run for 15 minutes.
after 15 minutes squeeze and hold for about 10 seconds the top radiator hose that runs from the radiator to the thermostat houseing.
it will be hot if thermostat is working so use a rag or towel...this should force air bubble out....you may need to repeat this several times over a couple of days.
once done be sure to add coolant because after air exits it will drop some.
The radiator cap could be the cause of coolant reservoir overflow or backup. Have the cap checked to see if it is bad.
If the coolant reservoir can not maintain the proper level of coolant, it is possible the engine could over heat when the level drops.
It probably has a leak. Here's something to check - the radiator has a tube coming out to the reservoir, so when it gets hot and expands the coolant goes into the reservoir and should go back into the radiator when it cools, but if your reservoir has a crack and the coolant leaks out, well it's gone and can't go back into the radiator - this would cause a lot of loss of coolant.
No, this could mean you have a cracked head gasket and engine pressure has entered the coolant.

first you must determine what is actually contaminating the coolant,usually in the detroit series 60 engine it is fuel oil,usually caused by faulty injector cups!
No it probably means you have a leak some where. Try pressurizing your system to find the leak.
The coolant sensor moniters the coolant temperature. A faulty thermostat could cause the engine to run cool.
Possibly a leak in the coolant reservoir bottle.
It could end up popping the reservoir cover off and "burping" the excess coolant out.
