Your laptop will use full audio quality if you turn up the volume 100% and change your settings to high volume.
A crossover separates the high frequencies from the low frequencies, usually around 2000Hz, so you can send the highs to a tweeter or smaller speaker and the lows to a woofer. For some reason it sounds better that way than sending the full audio spectrum to both speakers.
Audio out or headset out from the laptop to audio IN on the surround unit. The audio level on the laptop might need to be set at MAX to get enough volume for the surround to use properly. To hear a full surround sound signal you will need to have content that is stored in a surround sound format and a sound card that supports multi-channel audio outputs.
The crossover sends only bass tones to the woofer, and only treble tones to the tweeter. The woofer does not have to try and reproduce high tones accurately - which it cannot (they would be muffled), and the tweeter does not have to try and reproduce bass tones (which it cannot at all.) The sound is much more even and balanced.

Assuming you are connected to the audio output connectors on the TV, you might have to turn up the volume of the TV to get any audio to appear at the output connectors. If it is a high end set, go into the audio menu and switch the audio output to FIXED. This will give you full level audio at the connectors and then turn down the sound from the TV speakers. Don't use the internal speakers when using the sound system.
