Since 1998 no Prius have had battery replacement due to "wearing out". So far only accidents or defective batteries have been replaced. Keep in mind the Prius does not use one big battery either, instead it is 10 or 12 smaller batteries in a long casing. If one should deplead they would just replace that unit. Toyota expected the batteries to last 8-10 years but are now finding out they will last much longer. They only way to really test it is to let time go buy and see.

The other is the high voltage battery. The small 12 volt battery lasts on average 4 or 5 years. This battery is usually trouble free, unless you don't drive your prius very much. I believe these run around $150 USD. The lifespan of the high voltage battery varies. I saw one go bad at around 90,000 miles. Another prius made 150,000 on its high voltage battery. Expect to pay about $3,500 USD for one of these. Both of these batteries can only be purchased at your local Toyota dealer.
