All you need to do is disconnect the vac hose where is meets the throttle intake housing (the one that goes from the EGR to the Carb) and plug it at the intake. Go for a ride and see if the problem still persists....(I'm assuming it it sluggish or almost choking when accelerating from a stop or going up a hill) If there's no problem any more, it is a faulty or stuck EGR and needs replacement.
Depends on the year. Here is a site that has pictures of an EGR valve for a 1997 - 1999 Suburban: http://www.racepages.com/products/?D=gmc+suburban+egr+valve&Nty=1&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Ntk=Main&N=4294950670+4294963366+9926&Dx=mode+matchallpartial&Ntt=gmc+suburban+egr+valve Go to www.racepages.com and search for an EGR valve for your year rig.
Yes
behind the throttle body
The EGR valve is located on the intake manifold, behind and to the passenger side of the throttle body.
yes they do... Or at least on a duramax
You cannot manually test the EGR valve like you can with most ie. applying vaccum and depressing the diaphram. The EGR valve is controlled by the ECM you must have an OBD-2 compliant scan tool to montinor EGR functions.
A simple but effective test is to remove the linear EGR and tell a helper to turn on the ignition (don't crank the car thought). You should see movement in the EGR. A the very least a small vale should either move outward or inward.
Front of Engine near Thermostat Housing
why is my 1990 305 gmc idling rough when on the gas peddle runs great
The EGR valve is located on the front part of the engine on a 2002 GMC Yukon XL SLT. It is in front of the area where you add oil to the car.
This is from AutoZone: "On your 1997 GMC TRUCK SAFARI VAN 2WD, the EGR VALVE is UNDER HOOD, CENTER, UPPER ENGINE AREA, FRONT OF INTAKE MANIFOLD, PASSENGER SIDE OF WATER OUTLET, MOUNTED IN INTAKE MANIFOLD."
it is near the front of the engine it has stainlees steel outer cover
