The user manual says use a screwdriver to release the clips, this is incorrect. Having just changed the bulb on my wife's S-Max I can advise that the stainless steel clips need to be pinched together using your fingers and the whole lens assembly including the clips pushes out through the body of tailgate. On a 1996 Ford Explorer tail lights, If you lower or lift the tailgate there should be some screws on the inside jam of where the tailgate closes you will need to remove the screws, the light fixture may fall so have some one hold it while you take out the screws. Also you may need a torx head screwdriver.
