The crankshaft position sensor is located under the lower timing belt cover, behind the timing belt on the forward section of the motor. To access it you must remove the Power Steering pump, timing covers, waetr pump pulley, and crank pulley. Then the timing belt.
The cable is fastened to the timing back-up plate behind the power steering pump. It connects on the left side of the fuel rail behind the head at the top.
One thing to know is that you will have to keep your cams aligned when you remove timing belt, also you have to have all the components lined up before you remove timing belt, very very important. to keep cams aligned i used two socket wrenches with a block of wood between them for that. This is a pretty tough job so make sure you know what your doing.

On the 2002 Vue with the v6 engine, the sensor is on the side of the engine. The sensor is right beside of the oil filter.
Under the alternator above the crank pully. 10mm bolt.
It is possible for the alternator high frequency to interfere with an unshielded crank sensor wire or cam sensor wire. This is what happened to my 2002 windstar. The fix is either replace the alternator with a ford unit and/or wrapping the crank sensor wire with tin foil and then grounding it
