1. get the sending unit (i got mine from a seller on EBAY)... 2. remove fuel cap from vehicle. 3. verify fuel level is 1/8 tank or lower (tank is 25 pounds when empty and a gallon of liquid is 2 pounds...) 4. using a drip pan for leaking fuel, remove 3 fuel lines from front of FUEL TANK. 5. locate 3 metal retaining straps for fuel tank and remove the bolts. 6. allow the tank to lower gently about 2 or 3 inches and looking between tank and vehicle you see a few plugs, remove the wiring. 7. remove the filler neck hose and the overflow hose from the rear of the tank. 8. now take the tank down all the way and slide it out from under the vehicle. 9. slowly unscrew "retaining ring" on top of tank holding fuel pump and sending unit into tank. 10. lift entire unit up being careful not to bend sending unit FLOAT ROD. 11. float rod easily unsnaps, all wiring of sending unit easily unsnaps, and actual unit unsnaps and slides down. 12. installation is reversal order of this procedure.
Most of the time it's the fuel level sender in the fuel tank if your gauge moves around a bit but doesn't read correctly. If the Gauge is stuck on full all the time, the gauge itself is broken.
Chevrolet had a problem with it's combination sender/switch units used on the 350ci (5.7L) TBI engines in full-size trucks and cars between 1990 and 2000. The sender becomes inoperable due to a loose wire inside the sender itself and makes the gauge erratic. The fix is to replace the sender/switch.
1990 Chevrolet Lumina temperature sender is located on the back side of the thermostat housing. The sender has a wire that goes to the temperature gauge.
fuel gauge sender and pump are in the gas tank (which must be removed).
bad temp sender usually. Bad gauge rarely.
In the 1999-2002 vans, the fuel level senders were not robust to alcohols and either the resistor degraded and stopped working or the fingers on the sender corroded and broke off. Very common problem. It will cause intermittent operation of the fuel gauge or complete failure. You have to remove the fuel tank and replace the fuel sending unit.
My fuel gauge, odometer and radiator gauge isn't working and my radio says locked. How can I fix this?
You can`t. You must replace sender or guage.
Take wire off temperature sender look a guage. If guage at cool, temp sender needs replacement. If guage still at hot, temp sender wire shorted to engine or vehicle body.
sticking float on the fuel pump, or malfunction in the float
Don't know about the fuse, but the most likely cause for your fuel gauge to quit working is a bad sender unit. You are going to have to drop the tank and replace the whole fuel pump assembly (you can't buy the sender by itself) Don't know about the fuse, but the most likely cause for your fuel gauge to quit working is a bad sender unit. Did you ground the sender wire to see if it is the gauge or the sender? Need more help contact me through my board and I will try to help.
