The distributor is bolted to the head and is driven off the cam. The easiest way to replace it is to remove the distributor cap and place it on the valve cover, leaving the spark plug wires connected. Disconnect the connector at the distributor and unbolt the distributor for the head. Position the new distributors shaft in the same position as the old distributor so it can be installed the same way. The distributor drive must engage the end of the camshaft. Lubricate the new distributors O-ring with oil, Install the new distributor, wiggling the shaft slightly can help locate engage the camshaft. After bolting it in and connecting the wiring harness, you can install the cap/rotor. If you are installing an new cap/rotor, you can remove the wires one at a time so not to mix up their positions.
