Equipment:
- vehicle jack (to raise vehicle)
- lug wrench (to remove wheel lug nuts)
- Bit socket hex wrench (7mm)
- 8inch C-clamp
- Brake cleaner
- Brake pads
- Brake fluid (DOT-3) Before starting make sure you have the right sized bit socket hex wrench (7mm). The rear brake calipers are held in place by 2 brake caliper bolts that take a bit socket hex wrench to remove. Loosen the filler cap on the brake master cylinder under the hood. When you get to the part of squeezing the brake calipers, this loosened cap will take off the pressure. Make sure the vehicle is in gear and the parking brake is off. Loosen the lug nuts on the wheel and then raise the vehicle and remove the wheel. The calipers will be located at the top of the brake rotor disc. The caliper bolts are located on the back side - one on each side of the caliper. They're covered with a rubber sleeve. Insert the hex wrench and turn - they're tight so be careful. remember: righty tighty lefty loosie. Take the C-clamp, set the base on the backside of the caliper and the bolt part on the outside brake pad surface and use it to gently and slowly squeeze the caliper open. The springs on the outside brake pad will be stretched and damaged by this. Then raise the calipers and remove the brake pads. The outside pad is held in place with nubs and springs. The back pad is held by spring that fits into the caliper piston. Spray the calipers with brake cleaner and put in the new pads. Put the calipers back in place - should be able to squeeze the caliper piston by hand if needed to open them up more. Screw in the caliper bolts and tighten. Put the wheel back on, put on the lug nuts and lower the vehicle - finish up tightening the lug nuts. Check the master cylinder fluid level and top off if necessary. It's a good idea to bleed the brake lines. Done.
