Use a Mega Ohm meter, alaso known as a "Megger". Depending on the type of insulation you need to figure out what voltage to use. The test voltage can range from 500V to 5KV and you have to be sure you know what you are doing and use the right one....

As always, if you are in doubt about what to do, the best advice anyone should give you is to call a licensed electrician to advise what work is needed.

Before you do any work yourself,

on electrical circuits, equipment or appliances,

always use a test meter to ensure the circuit is, in fact, de-energized.

IF YOU ARE NOT ALREADY SURE YOU CAN DO THIS JOB

SAFELY AND COMPETENTLY

REFER THIS WORK TO QUALIFIED PROFESSIONALS.

Why not use an ohm meter to measure the leakage in wire insulation?

An ohm meter measures resistance in a circuit, not leakage in wire insulation. To measure insulation resistance or leakage in wire insulation, you would typically use a megohmmeter or insulation resistance tester, which applies a higher voltage than an ohm meter to test the integrity of the insulation.

Why multimeter cannot used for measurement of insulation resistance?

Because ordinary ohmmeters are calibrated to measure a range of resistance values that are significantly lower than the resistance of insulation. It should also be realised that we usually test insulation resistance while subjecting the insulation to a high electric field, which a normal ohmmeter is incapable of producing.

What is difference between insulation resistance test and polarization index?

Insulation resistance test: This test is used to find the insulation resistance of motor for 1 min or 10 min through high voltage insulation tester. By this we can find the insulation level. Polarization index: This is the ratio between insulation resistance for 10 min to insulation resistance for 1 min.

What is isolation resistance?

I think you mean, 'insulation' resistance! It's the resistance of insulation, normally expressed in megohms.

Who invented the insulation resistance tester?

The insulation resistance tester was invented by Dr. Oliver Shallenberger in the early 20th century. He developed the device to measure the resistance of electrical insulation materials to prevent electrical failures and accidents.

What is excessive electrical resistance?

High resistance means insulation

Solid layer test method on insulator?

One common method to test the solid layer on an insulator is the Megger test, where a high voltage is applied across the insulation to measure its resistance. Another method is the insulation resistance test, which measures the resistance of the insulation to detect any defects. Additionally, visual inspection can also be used to check for any visible damage or contamination on the insulator's surface layer.

What happens to insulation resistance when increasing cable length?

The insulation resistance remains the same throughout the entire length of the conductor.

What is insulation megger draw and explain with neat diagram?

Meggar is a hand driven tool for measuring insulation resistance and earth resistance.

What is meggers?

A megger is an electrical instrument that is used to measure the resistance of insulation by applying a DC voltage to the conductor. One lead is connected to the conductor and the other lead is connected to ground. Safe insulation reading to ground should be above 2,000,000 ohms or 2 megs.
