Pull out the dipstick ( usually yellow handle ) with engine warm but off. look at the level of oil on the end of the stick. Usually there are two marks or lines on the dipstick with hashmarks between them. Where the hashmarks end at the bottom of the stick is the low limit for safe operation and is sometimes accompanied by the words add qt. Anywhere below the highest line on the stick indicates that you need to add oil and not to exceed the highest mark at the top of the hashmarks this is the high limit line and it is not safe to operate above this mark.
