there is no timing belt. it is a timing chain and doesn't need replacement unless it is damaged.
Buy a Chilton or Hayes manual at the local auto parts store.

what steps do i take to change a timing belt for a '97 mitsubishi mirage

The 2.2 and the 2.4 both have timing chains
The hanes manual tells you how to do it. I will be doing it this next weekend.
can somebody help me get a diagram for a 2002 Chevy cavalier, i need the cam chain ( i need to change the timing chain) thank you

No, the piston won't fit out the bottom
It will cost you nothing because your Cavalier has a timing chain and not a belt. The chain is designed to last the life of the engine.
