I open the back and change the battery, if that does not work I see if the internal contacts can be cleaned and if they need to be cleaned. If the cleaned contacts don't work I buy a new one and have it programed for the car.
they are two different types of batterys, the car recharges it's battery as you drive, that battery is a rechargable battery. the torch does not have a rechargable battery but you can add one to it.
