There is a backup switch in the gearbox. When you shift into reverse, the gear box switch contacts the switch and lights the white reverse lights. The inhibitor switch, or alternitively known as the Neutral Safety Switch or Multi-Function Switch for automatic gearbox, is located on the bottom of the automatic transmisssion, it is a black half moon shaped switch which is connected to the gear linkage by 3 bolts. Whilst looking under the car the switch is located on the bottom side of the gearbox near the bottom of the bumper, und0 gear linkage bold, remove final two bolts and unplug. Reverse this to replace with new part, the part number for the replacement from VW is 001-919-823 at it is £86.06 inc vat.

Its near the shifer or on the side of the gearbox one is a neutral switch and the other a reverse switch both have only 2 wires coming out of them If ouyr talking about a automatic is olso on the side.. this information is easily found in a workshop manual.. try registering with ausrotary.com or any other rotary forum and search for it there their and free!
You should replace it if the write protect switch is not working properly.
