I own two Dodge caravans and know how the transmissions are with these vehicles. It could be anything from wrong/dirty/low Transmission Fluid on up to needing a transmission rebuild.
First, check the fluid level and smell to check if it smells burned or looks brownish in color. If the check engine light is on you can go to most local part stores for them to pull the code for free and then research whatever code it gives. The auto parts employees may give you some indication of what it could be. If no code, I would start at the least expensive and work my way up. A lot of times a proper transmission service (NOT flush- especially with high mileage vehicles), with the proper fluid (check w/ dealer), will do the trick. Make sure to check applicable fuses and connections, etc.
It is hard to tell what the problem could be since you are not describing all of what it is doing. Can you put it in gear and it won't go (like it seems to stay in neutral when you try to put it in drive)? If so, that could be improper/worn trans fluid, the solenoid pack, a TCM issue, etc. The solenoid pack has tiny filter screens that can get clogged over time. It is easy to replace if you are so inclined but you will have to do a quick relearn or have the dealership reprogram for a fee. Is it stuck in any certain gear? Will it drive but only in low gear and not shift to higher gears? If so, that may mean it is going into fail safe mode to protect the transmission from any further damage and could be any number of things, from a sensor (PRNDL Switch, throttling position sensor, etc.) to internal tranny issue.
My advice to you is have someone you trust that knows about these transmissions check and help you figure it out.
faulty speed sensor in the transmission
It is the rectangular block on the front of the trans case.
It will not shift, the sensors and connectors are all different.
At times the odometer will stop working, then it will shift hard. 1994 Dodge Grand Caravan
Many things are inputed to tell the tranny to shift. The Solonoid pack executes the shift, and the transmission control module tells it when to shift. A good resouce is www.allpar.com.
Loose hold down clamp or broken shift cable.
my 1999 dodge caravan did the same thing and it was the speed sensor gone in it.THE speed sensor is located on top of transmission drivers side. Have it checked for codes, could be major or minor.
a blown transmission they are known for that expect a $1200 rebuild
The speed sensor sends a signal to the speedometer to show the correct speed and it sends a signal to the transmission telling when to shift. If the speed sensor is bad the speedometer will not work and the transmission will not shift correctly.
Not sure what you mean by transmission selector sensor. The transmission range sensor reads what position you have selected with the gear shift lever.
P0736 DODGE - Gear Ratio Error In Reverse GearPossible causes- Low transmission fluid level- Dirty transmission fluid- Shift solenoids- Transmission mechanical problems- Transmission hydraulic control circuit
Have the transmission computer checked for codes. It will lock into 2nd gear when a malfunction is detected.
