Drain the radiator. Remove the pump belt, fan, and fan shroud. Unbolt the pump then remove it. Bolt the new pump on, and install the fan an shroud. Put the belt on and refill the radiator with fresh coolant.
Drain the radiator on the 1988 Cavalier. Take of the water pump belt. If the fan and shroud are in the way then remove them. unbolt and remove the pump. Bolt up the new pump and put the belt back on. Put the shroud and fan on if they were removed. Fill the radiator back up.
You first disconnect the battery, then drain the cooling system, discount belt from engine and water belt pulley, then remove the water pump bolts and remove the water pump, then you install the new water pump and put everything back.
remove compressor put a bypass pulley in its place replace belt
the pump is on the right side of the engine there is a small drive belt (the pump is a cartage type not like your usual pump to remove it you need a span er socket) rent from auto supply store remove coolant from engine catch in pan save reuse if clean remove drive belt cover and belt move the belt adjustment to get belt off remove the water pump housing cover insert span er turn 1/4 turn to remove pump (note the pump costs about 50 $)reinstall new pump put gasket on pump housing replace pump drive belt and cover make sure the belt adjustment is on the belt wright replace antifreeze in cooling system run check for leaks double check coolant level
You have to remove the alternator, driving belts (serpentine belt, stirring pump belt). After that remove the engine mount on the passenger side of the car (do not forget to put something underneath the engine before removing the mount). After that you need remove the upper timing belt cover. Remove the crankshaft pulley and lower timing belt cover. Put the marks on the timing belt. Loosen the timing belt pulley, stretch the spring, and tighten the timing belt pulley. Remove the timing belt. After this you get access to the oil pump, which is going around the crankshaft and has dozen of bolts to remove. PS: Before you start make sure you have to gasket because they are not reusable.
Loosen the bolts on the pump to allow the belt to lose tension. Remove the belt, then put on the new belt. Pull the pump to tighten the belt snug but not over tight while tightening the bolts.
You have to take off the serpentine belts so that you can remove the pulley for the water pump. You also have to take off the cam head so that you can get to the timing belt case and remove the plastic splash guards in front of the water pump. Remove the timing belt, then there are 4 bolts attaching the water pump. Remove those bolts and then disconnect the water intake and put your new pump in and replace the timing belt. **Make sure that your timing marks are located where they need to be before replacing the timing belt.**
To change the water pump on a Chevy Celebrity 2.8L water pump 1987 to 1990: 1. Using a suitable drain pan loosen the drain and allow the coolant to drain. 2. Remove the belt guard above the water pump pulley. 3. Release the tension on the serpentine belt and remove the belt. Take careful note of the routing of the serpentine belt for replacement purposes. 4. Hold the water pump pulley still and remove the bolts that hold it in place. 5. Remove the bolts that hold the water pump in place and remove the pump. Clean the mounting surface so that a new gasket will seal. Using a new gasket install the replacement pump Reinstall the pulley and put the serpentine belt back in place' Put the belt guard back in place. Refill the radiator with coolant, check for leaks..
1 Remove the belt guard. 2 Remove belt from front top pulley. 3/8 square drive needed to remove tensioner assembly. 3 unbolt that pulley 4 unbolt water pump. Slides right out.
Best done by a mechanic...but you first remove the cover from the front of the engine. Then you will see the timing belt and the water pump. Remove the belt first then the two bolts from the water pump. Install the new pump and also put on a new timing belt and you're done. The reason it's best done by a mechanic is you could easily muck up the timing.
Remove the top half of the fan schroud. Remove the serpentine belt. Remove hoses. Stuff rag in hoses to keep radiator fluid in. Keep drain pan under car to catch coolant from pump. Do this over a grassy area. Wash down after done. Remove all bolts holding fan. Remove pump bolts. Remove pump. Clean off old gasket. Put gasket sealer on new pump. Put new gasket on pump. Put gasket sealer where pump connects to engine. Install new pump. Tighten bolts on pump clockwise evenly. Reverse order to reassemble. Check pump for leaks. Remove the top half of the fan schroud.
