It's a risk, in any case. Even if the belt only goes to the AC compressor (and not the alternator, as well), there is the possibility that it could take out the other belts when it breaks.

My AC belt busted. My AC has other issues and hasn't been used in years. Will it be fine without the belt though?

I believe the only thing that belt was driving is the AC compressor. Check to make sure that the belt wasn't turning anything else. If all it was driving was the compressor, and you don't need to use the ac, you can drive your car without that belt.

Does the 1990 Toyota Corolla ac compressor operate from a separate drive belt or the serpentine belt?

it has its own belt. it looks like a serp belt but it isnt. its just a ribbed belt.

When should you change serpentine belt on vw 2001 passat?

Check the serpentine belt for cracking and "checking" by a close visual examination. Look at the "inside" of the belt where it rides on the pulleys. The grooves should not be cracked, or missing ridges on the inside of the belt. Also, check the idler/tensioner pulley bearing for noise/wear. I changed mine when I replaced the spur ( timing ) drive belt and tensioner/idler pulley/shock absorber at 100,000mi. I also replaced the AC compressor drive belt and idler/tensioner pulley at that time.
