The filler plug is on the rear section of the transmission that the drive shafts bolt on to, it looks alot like the drain plug and is fairly obvious. The tranny itself fills from the dipstick tube.

If its out of warranty take it to Toyota dealership and ask for a "drain and fill" Shouldn't cost much more than about 2x the price of an oil change... This drain and fill process only drains about 40% if the fluid since a large part of it remains in the torque converter. After about 3 drain and fills you have in essence replaced all the transmission fluid. I suggest transmission drain and fills be done every 30,000km at least. USE GENUINE TOYOTA TRANSMISSION FLUID type T-IV only......
According to the 2003 Ford Explorer Sport Owner Guide : ( 16.8 US. gallons ) is the tank capacity
A transmission that is over full (automatic particularly) will fail very soonA tiny bit over will not cause trouble...BUTAny more will cause oil foaming, clutch slippage, oil pump failure, spraying oil out of vents and possible vehicle fire.Manual trans will do the same thing but are more tolerant to minor over fills.

There is a drain plug on the front of the transmission (drivers side). This is the only access to the tranny fluid. It fills like the rear differential on a 4wd truck, pump fluid into the hole until it comes out. This all has to be done w/ the tranny fluid at a certain temp. which is checked by a diag. Tool called VAG-COM. This has to be performed while the car is in the air as the plug is not serviceable from the top of the engine bay... P.I.T.A.
It would be better to have the water fills due to amount of splash out that would occur.
No , it's a smaller tank ( 21 gallons instead of 22.5 gallons ) and it fills from the driver side instead of the passenger side
