She said that the idea came to her when she was channel Surfing late at night.

She was flicking between a news about the war in Iraq and reality show where young adults were answering questions and she said that they started to merge in a very unsettling way and that's where The Hunger Games came from.

Suzanne Collins has mentioned being inspired by a variety of sources, including Greek mythology, reality television, and her father's military career. She has also cited the impact of war on society and the power dynamics of oppressive regimes as themes that influence her writing.

Suzanne Collins was inspired to write the Hunger Games by stories from war and how people had to go to save their country. She thought instead of countries, why not use districts and instead of all the boys going, only 1 girl and 1 boy from each district would go to fight for their lives. The children had to be under 18 but over 10 and they did not choose to go: they had their names pulled out of a bowl.

Suzanne Collins got her inspiartion for 'The Hunger Games' when she was flicking through the channels on her TV and she saw all these Reality TV Shows and showed them fighting, loving, hating etc. and thought what would happen if these fights were to the death? She rolled with this idea and came up with the first book. So she came up with the idea by just extending on the real world :)

Suzanne has said that she was inspired because one day she was watching TV and flipping back and forth between reality TV and war coverage, and she had the idea of merging the two. From this, The Hunger Games was born.
