∙ 10y agoDirect quotations are handled the same way in a business document as they are in other documents. You put quotations around a direct quotation just like in any other document.
In dialogue, periods, commas, question marks, and exclamation points go inside quotation marks. (A semicolon goes outside quotation marks but isn't used much in dialogue, so you don't need to worry about it.)
Quotation marks are used for direct quotes only. Indirect quotes are paraphrased and do not need quotation marks.
A direct quotation is indicated by the use of quotation marks. It looks like this: the other day, Fred told me "I am tired of working for the company". If I did not wish to quote Fred, but merely wanted to paraphrase him, I could say, the other day Fred told me that he didn't want to continue working for the company.
In American English, periods and commas should always be placed inside the set of quotation marks. Question marks and semicolons are placed inside the quotation marks when they belong to the quoted material but outside when they apply to the whole sentence.
Parentheses can be used to provide additional information about the direct quotation, such as the source, date, or context. They can help clarify details without disrupting the flow of the main text.
Punctuation marks such as periods and commas should be placed outside the set of quotation marks. Question marks and exclamation points should be placed inside if they are part of the quoted material, and outside if they are not.
Commas can be used in direct quotations to separate two complete thoughts or elements within the quotation. For example: "I am tired," she said, "and I need some rest."
Concrete examples are statements that include direct quotations from a viable source, usually from a book or a textbook. These are usually followed by an opinion that shows how this quotation proves your point.
Direct references in writing are specific and explicit mentions of sources, ideas, or information that are cited or acknowledged within the text. These references can include quotations, paraphrased material, and citations that attribute the information to a particular source. They are a crucial part of academic writing to give credit to the original authors and to support the points being made.
He asked, "What is an indirect quotation?"
When using direct quotations in your writing, it is important to enclose the quoted text in quotation marks to indicate that it is someone else's words. Additionally, you should attribute the quote to its original source by citing the author's name and publication information. Lastly, make sure the quote is integrated smoothly into your own writing to provide context and flow.
