Waltzes?
This has been really puzzling me too as I couldn't think what it might be! I have googled using many different terms and mostly got references to German political parties or German immigrants to America.
Eventually however I conclude that "the German" is simply a waltz as it was the German dance of the time! Not as exciting as I imagined -although it doesn't quite fit with their getting tissue-paper suits etc..

She didn't. Louisa May Alcott died in 1888, twenty-nine years before the Pulitzer Prizes were first awarded. Perhaps you refer to the 2008 Pulitzer Prize winner in Biography, Eden's Outcasts: The Story of Louisa May Alcott and Her Father, by John Matteson, which looks at the family history of the author of Little Women.
