Establishing good study skills is essential to your success in college. Keep in mind that study skills should continuously be honed. If a study technique you used in the past is no longer working, it’s time to update and improve your study skills. Here are three ways to do this.
·
Observe the habits of successful students. Take time to observe people who you consider to be good/successful students. When/how do they study? Would some of the techniques they use be applicable/helpful to you? Don’t be shy about asking their advice. Most successful individuals are happy to talk about how they achieved their success.
·
Be honest about how you spend your time each day. Take a good look at how you spend your time. Are you using it wisely? What are some things you could do to become more efficient? Sometimes we get into a mode of thinking that the more time we spend on a class, the better our grade will be. While it’s important to dedicate a large amount of time to your studies, what you do within that time makes all the difference.
·
Take time to communicate with professors and T.A.s. If you feel like you could be performing better in a specific class, make an appointment to meet with your professor and T.A. Be prepared to talk about specific areas in which you want to improve (don’t come in with blanket questions like “What do I need to do to get an A?”). Listen to your professor or T.A.’s advice, and then begin applying it.
