Ebenezer Scrooge is a wealthy but mean and miserly old man who believes Christmas is just a trick most people use to gain a day off work. On Christmas Eve, he is visited by the following spirits: First ghost: Jacob Marley, Scrooge's late business partner, warning him of continuing in miserly ways; Second, the Ghost of Christmas Past, showed him how he used to be warm and generous and how he has changed into a mean and miserly man; Third, the Ghost of Christmas Present, shows him that in the homes of both Bob Cratchit and Scrooge's nephew Fred, he is toasted in goodwill and affection (by most people). Explains how want and ignorance will destroy society if we do not learn to care for each other; Fourth, the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, takes Scrooge to a vision of how he will die. The next morning, shaken but exuberant, he has turned into a giving and loving man who seeks to benefit society in general and the people he comes to love, like little crippled Tiny Tim.

Dickens called his story "A Christmas Carol" because its claimed he expected the story to be repeated and shared and it would bring people together just as the singing of Christmas carols would spreading joy and brining families together each season throughout London. His carol was a song of praise of the Christmas season and of the redemption of Mr Ebenezer Scrooge.

In keeping with the title Dickens called the five chapters of the book "staves." A musical stave is a stanza with a consistent theme and mood. Each stave in the story delivers a different message and each has a definite mood. As in a carol each stave can stand alone but each stave contributes to the carol's overall theme.

At the age of 12 Dickens father was imprisoned for a small debt. Debt at that time was a criminal offense. The area he lived was full of people who were poor, had nothing to eat and nowhere to live. Dickens found work in a shoe polish factory (child labour). This turned Dickens against the use of such labour as industrialists were using children because they were cheap labour and then the adults were unable to access paid work. This was a point Dickens fought all his life and especially when a celebrated MP in parliament denied that there was an issue of deprivation in Britain at the time

When the story was written in the 1800's people did not celebrate Christmas with a family dinner, a tree, or other things we consider a traditional Christmas. After the publication of the story people copied the Christmas dinner and other things in the story. This relates to us by providing a history of why we do what we do today and that is how the story relates to history.
