There is no evidence of a conspiracy concerning the death of Edgar Allan Poe. Poe, age 40 years, was found lying unconscious on September 28, 1849, outside a saloon. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he died four days later. The case was reviewed by R. Michael Benitez M.D., a cardiologist at University of Maryland Medical Center and published his findings in September 1996.
Dr. Benitez's conclusion was that Poe died of rabies after studying Poe's records from his hospitalization. Benitez stated that rabies was most likely the killer despite little evidence of a bite. Benitez claimed that only 27% of rabies victims remembered being bitten.
Although not as intriguing as a conspiracy of murder, a plot Poe used in his stories, Dr. Benitez's findings are as accurate as can be under the circumstances.
There are various theories surrounding Edgar Allan Poe's death, including alcohol poisoning, suicide, and foul play. However, there is no concrete evidence to support any particular conspiracy, and his death remains shrouded in mystery.
