Edgar Allan Poe didn't disappear; he died. In 1849. However, he did arguably disappear before he died: no one knows where Poe was, or what he was doing, in the days leading up to his death, and nobody knows exactly what the cause of death was. See Wikipedia's entry linked below for the full story. Incidentally, there is a historical novel called The Poe Shadow, by Matthew Pearl (author of The Dante Club), about a young man who tries to solve the mystery of Poe's death. I've only read half of it, though: the plot is good, but the writing style is really old-fashioned and dense, which makes it a difficult read.
