The first compressors were actually not made on purpose, but were a result of the limitations of magnetic tape recording. Recording at a high level results in tape 'saturation', which limits the dynamic range of the recording.

The first commercial studio compressors (not custom-built) were the Teletronix LA-2A (1965) and the Universal Audio 1176 (1968).
