Advantages of blu-ray, specially in comparison to CDs and DVDs are :-
- Very large storage space on a single disc. Single layer discs can store upto 25GBs (25 gigabyte or about 25,000,000,000 bytes) and dual layers can store 50GBs of data on them. Compare that to a CDs 700MB (0.7GB) and a DVDs 4.7GB
- Larger storage means smaller storage areas and more data on a single disk.
- Reduces the need for storing large data on multiple discs. Data usually larger than 4.3GB cannot be stored on a single DVD and has to be split into 2. With larger capacities, that problem is eliminated.
- We can have high definition videos and higher resolution videos and movies on the disc. Higher resolution take up larger storage. Blue-rays can support such large movies on them.
The blu ray player on the Sony PS3 is actually one of the best on the market. Before blu ray players became cheaper,the PS3 was the best value on the market. You can definitely get away with using the ps3 as a blu ray player instead of buying a stand alone.
One added benefit would be that there is another game console in the same device, along with the blu ray player. This can either be good or bad: if it breaks, you're out two devices, instead of one, but it only takes up one spot in your entertainment center instead of two. There's also memory included in the PS3, so if you need extra computer storage, that would be your best bet.
If you own a Blu-Ray player the movies you purchase will be higher quality than an ordinary DVD player.You can even put regular DVD's and the quality will be so much better. Blu-Ray discs are also proven to have better sound.

Beacaus bluray is newer and they think everybody has a bluray player... eventually it will come on dvd.
