You get another memory storage device, such as an external hard drive, and you copy everything on your hard drive onto the external hard drive, and keep it safe. That way, if your hard drive crashes, then you can take it out, and plug your external hard drive in, and work from that.

It can be..... But I use a maxtor 500gigabyte external hard drive, and it makes a world of difference. It has boosted my ram, and prosscessing speed, and I can take it to work, plug it into my computer there, with all my programs, so i can add in what I did at home instead of lugging around my laptop. I recommend external hard drives more than just adding a 2nd hard drive.

Yes you can, when the computer is booting up open the boot menu and choose the external as your boot device, i have a external hard drive with Ubuntu on it and do exactly that, I'm sure it can work with windows.
