Well, he did declare war against the USA in the late 80's. His group that he made, and was the brains of, was called "Al-Qaeda." The reason for the declaration of war was unclear though. The US wasn't worried about him first, but then he became a bigger problem where he and his group took responsibility of the 9/11 attacks on the Twin Towers in The USA and other bombastic situations. That was when the US took him seriously, they tried to do everything to bring him to justice. They had 10 ways to kill Bin Laden, But they all failed. Here they are:
1. Ambush (x2)
2. Infiltration (x2)
3. Aerial Attacks (x2)
4. Bombing (x2)
5. Head-to-Head fighting (x2)
But now that President Obama, brought Bin Laden to justice in 2011, everyone seems to be happy. He was caught in Pakistani soil in the biggest compound in the village, and was estimated that he was there for the last 5 years says US officials. When he was dead, he was thrown off a plane into the ocean by the US. No country was taking him to their grounds and burring him, so he was thrown off a plane and into the ocean. When that was over, US forces discovered some home videos, and some interesting notes. He was planning to to do another 9/11 attack on the US, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

That is actually a very general statement. The "Muslim world" as a whole does not consider him a hero. There were many Muslims that were very disturbed and upset by many of the things that Osama bin Laden did during his lifetime.
However, there are some that did support his actions. There are many reasons. The very basic one are as follows. There are certain groups of Muslims that felt that because the US supported the Israeli military in Lebanon, that all US troops should be killed on sight. They also feel that the "western" lifestyle is corrupt, and that those that live it deserve to be killed. Osama bin Laden reasoned that the 9/11 attacks were to "give the US a taste of what we have been tasting." To those, he was considered a hero. It is just important to keep in mind that his supporters do not represent the whole. In reality, there were actually several dozen American Muslims killed in the 911 attack of the World Trade Center.
