Because of Paul's liberation work, some religious organizations have declared him to be one of their 'saints' and so called him Saint Paul. But he spoke of himself as plain Paul. For instance, he said to people who wanted to make him their special leader:
Paul was not impaled for you, was he? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul.l For when one says: I belong to Paul, but another says: I to Apollos, are you not simply men? What, then, is Apollos? Yes, what is Paul? Ministers through whom you became believers, even as the Lord granted each one.1Cor. 1:13; 3:4, 5. In The Bible, all Christians are referred to as saints. It is not a special title given to only certain Christians. See for instance 1 Corinthians 1:2, 1 Corinthians 14:33, Ephesians 1:1, Ephesians 3:18, Philippians 1:1, Colossians 1:2, and many other such Scriptures. In general, all disciples who proved themselves to be true to Christ and to the ministry became Apostles (which includes Paul, as he was personally trained by the Lord in the wilderness), and all Apostles who proved themselves became Saints. : True sainthood is conferred by God, through the new birth. It is not the result of a ritual, a ceremony, an assigment of title by any man, church, organization, political body, or anything other than God. Nor is it the result of any innate righteousness or goodness, or even good deeds, but simply by faith in the finished work of Messiah Jesus. It is at once both the easiest and most difficult thing in the world to do.
St. Paul was not canonized. He was proclaimed a saint by early Christians because of his martyrdom. The modern canonization process did not come into existence until the 12th century. In the primitive Church, martyrs were immediately recognized as witnessing to the perfection of Christian life on earth, having shown the ultimate proof of their love for Christ by the offering of their lives. By the sacrifice of their lives for Christ, they attained Heaven in eternal glory and were indissolubly united to the Lord, the Head of the Mystical Church Body.
