The Smokey Mountains got their name because the trees give off some chemicals which in the presence of sunlight convert to a biologically produced photochemical smog which gives the mountains a hazy atmosphere, they look smokey.

The "smoke" in the name "Great Smoky Mountains" refers to the mist that hangs over the mountains, created by the dense vegetation releasing volatile organic compounds. This mist gives the appearance of smoke and is the reason behind the name.
