The area of the moon that man first walked on is called "Tranquility Base", because it was located in the Mare Tranquilatis area of the moon - one of the safest (and dullest), areas of the lunar surface. Being the first moon landing, NASA was taking no chances, hence the landing area was de facto "dull". This happened on July 20th, 1969. The Guinness Book of World Records called it "The greatest human achievement of the 20th century".

The first manned moon landing took place on July 20, 1969, in the southern Sea of Tranquility, located on the lunar surface. The Apollo 11 mission, with astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, made history by being the first humans to set foot on the moon.
