When Demeter could not find Persephone, she grieved deeply and went searching for her daughter all over the world. During this time, the Earth became barren as Demeter neglected her duties as the goddess of agriculture. This led to a famine until Zeus intervened and negotiated for Persephone to return for part of the year, bringing about the cycle of the seasons.

How did Demeter find Persephone?

Demeter found Persephone after Hades took her to the Underworld by searching the earth and appealing to various gods for help. Finally, Helios, the sun god, revealed Persephone's location to her.

What is Demeter claim to fame?

She's famous because Hades, the God of the Underworld, was shot by Cupid and fell instantly in love with her daughter, the Goddess of Spring, also known as Persephone. He opened up a black pit beneath her and she fell into the Underworld. She was forced to marry him. Demeter, frantic about the loss of her daughter, makes sure none of the crops grow in her misery. As mankind is starving, Zeus finally sends Hermes to find out what happened. Hermes talks to a farmer who lost his pigs mysteriously in what he described as a "pit as black as the night sky". He also interrogates the God of the Sun, who found out what happened. Zeus orders Hades to give Persephone back, but only if she didn't eat any food while in the Underworld. Persephone, unfortunately, had consumed three pomegranate seeds, and was forced to stay in the Underworld for half the year and could stay with her mother for the other half (Her mother is Demeter, remember.) So while Demeter had her daughter, the Earth enjoyed Spring and Summer. But when Persephone was forced to join Hades the other half of the year, Demeter made the land suffer during her misery, producing Fall and Winter. That's how the seasons were born, and that's how Demeter got famous.

What was the deal struck between Demeter and Hades?

well, the story is that Persephone, goddess of spring, was the daught of Demeter, goddess of the harvest, and Zeus, god of lightening. Hades came to Zeus asking if he could take Persephone down to the underworld and make her his bride. Zeus agreed, saying that if Hades could get Persephone to go with him to the underworld, he could make her his bride. Hades found Persephone picking flowers in a field with her friends and took her down to the underworld on his chariot. However, when Demeter couldn't find her daughter, she came to ask Zeus if he knew where Persephone was. When she learned what had happened, she threatened that if her daughter wasn't returned, she would prevent anything from growing. Under the threat of death for man kind, Zeus said that Persephone could return IF she hadn't eaten anything in the underworld. Unfortunately, Hades had tricked eating Persephone into eating a few pomegranate seeds. In a compromise, they agreed that Persephone would spend 9 months of the year with Demeter (spring, summer, and fall) but would return to her husband for the other three months (winter).

Persephone was lonely and took to wandering the gardens.Meanwhile, Demeter had gone on a crazy search for her daughter. Zeus was able to find Persephone and allowed her to come back to her mother as long as she hadn't eaten the fruit of the Underworld.Unfortunately, Persephone managed to eat seven pomegranate seeds. She had been terribly hungry and said it had onlybeen a few seeds. But Hades- desperate to keep his beloved- replied that the seeds were enough to matter.Hades and Demeter made a deal. Persephone had to stay in the Underworld for half the year and could go back to her mother for the other half as long as Persephone married Hades. Where are the pamagranetes on mythology?

They are in the greek myth of Hades and Persephone. You see, Demeter, the goddess of the crops and harvest, and Zeus, the king of the gods, had a daughter, Persephone. One day while Persephone was gathering wild flowers she was abducted by Hades, the god of the underworld where the dead live. Distraught when she could not find her daughter, Demeter wandered over the face of the earth trying to find out what had happened to her. She came to Eleusis disguised as an old woman, and was taken in by the king and queen to be the nurse for their son. Each night, while the palace slept, she placed the baby prince in the fire. One night the queen peeked and saw what the goddess was doing. Not unnaturally she snatched the baby out of the fire, and had hysterics. The goddess revealed who she really was and informed the queen that if she had not interfered, the baby would have been made immortal, all the mortal parts of him having been burned away. Demeter met Hecate, the goddess of witchcraft, who told her that she had heard Persephone calling out one day, and suggested she ask Helios, the Sun, if he had seen what had happened in his daily course across the sky. Helios told Demeter who had abducted her daughter, and Demeter went off to complain to Zeus, who was not only Persephone's father but Demeter and Hades' brother. Zeus refused to intervene, so Demeter withdrew from her role as goddess. Without her no crops could grow, and the resulting famine threatened the extinction of the human race. Eventually Zeus said that Hades would have to let Persephone go. When Persephone was reunited with her mother, Demeter asked if she had eaten anything while she was in the underworld. Persephone admitted she had eaten a pomegranate seed. Because of this, she now spends one-third of each year in the underworld as the wife of Hades, and two-thirds of the year with her mother. While Persephone is in the underworld, her mother mourns and refuses to allow crops to grow until she gets her daughter back again. So this myth would explain to the Greeks about how the seasons came.
