The lunar phase is the shape of the illuminated portion of the moon that's visible from earth.

The formal names of some of the phases also include a reference to what part of the lunar month that phase appears in. For example, when you see a "half moon" in the early evening, the official name for that phase is "First Quarter", because it occurs one week after the New Moon, out of a total cycle of four weeks.

The different phases of the moon refer to the changing appearance of the illuminated portion of the moon as seen from Earth. The eight primary phases are New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Third Quarter, and Waning Crescent. These phases are a result of the moon's position in relation to the sun and Earth, causing varying amounts of the illuminated side of the moon to be visible.
