Mars is considered an INNER planet. It is the 4th of the 8 major planets in distance from the Sun, and is closer to the Sun than the Main Belt of asteroids. All 4 inner planets are terrestrial (smaller, rocky planets) while the outer planets are gas giants.

*The inner planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars

*The outer planets are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.

Planets past Neptune include all but one of the Dwarf planets, including Pluto, and a large number of smaller icy bodies in the Kuiper Belt.
