The Soviet Union sent the first satellite and the first man into space. They achieved major Propaganda benefits as a result of being teh first. When Kennedy became president, he asked his vice-president, Lyndon Johnson, to tell him what the US could do and be first at. Johnson's response was to send men to the moon. Kennedy took it one step further when on May 25, 1961 he challenged the US to be the first to "land a man on the surface of the moon and return him safely to the earth." Kennedy's goal was met on July 24, 1969 after the successful landing and return of Apollo 11.
